Forest education, training and research are essential for addressing challenges such as the need to sustainably produce more timber for growing populations; addressing deforestation and forest degradation; conserving biodiversity; creating sustainable timber supply chains for domestic and international markets; alleviating poverty; restoring degraded forest landscapes; benefit-sharing; and creating an enabling environment for further investment in the forest sector.

ITTO builds human resource capacity and strengthens professional expertise in tropical forestry through hands-on education and training conducted under field projects and other activities. ITTO has also developed a substantial collection of knowledge products in the form of guidelines, technical reports, project outputs and other resources. The Organization also enables young and mid-career forestry professionals to build their expertise through its Fellowship Programme.
