ITTO presents at 10th Pacific Regional Wood Anatomy Conference in Hokkaido, Japan

ITTO Director of Trade and Industry Nurudeen Iddrisu, delivered a video lecture entitled “Sustainable Management of Tropical Forests and the Role of Wood Science in Forestry and Timber Trade” on behalf of ITTO Executive Director Sheam Satkuru at the 10th Pacific Regional Wood Anatomy Conference (PRWAC), held from 10–14 September 2024, in Hokkaido, Japan.

In his presentation, Dr Iddrisu emphasized the critical importance of tropical forests for planetary wellbeing and the key role that wood science plays in sustainable forestry and timber trade and outlined ITTO pilot programmes on Legal & Sustainable Supply Chains (LSSC), Conservation of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, and Forest Landscape Restoration and Resilient Livelihoods, showcasing the organization's dedication to strengthen sustainable forest management practices in tropical forests.

Dr Iddrisu also discussed the challenges associated with harvesting timber legally and sustainably. He pointed out the significance of timber tracking and wood science, particularly Wood Identification (Wood ID), in promoting effective sustainable forest management in the tropics.
