Summary
This 36-month project will focus on the development and dissemination of knowledge on sustainable management of bamboo and technologies to promote efficient utilization of bamboo which are recommended by pre-project PPD 4/98 Rev.1 (I) Promotion of Tropical Non-Wood Forest Products in Thailand.

The specific objectives of the project are (i) to study sustainable management of bamboo with a view to developing guidelines for improving sustainable harvesting of bamboo and (ii) to promote efficient utilization of bamboo with a view to generating income sources for rural communities.

The following outputs are expected to result from the implementation of the project:

i Two demonstration plots for sustainable management of bamboo in Chiang Mai and Nakornchasima.

ii Guidelines for sustainable management of bamboo, including plantation and harvesting.

iii Technical information on mechanical, chemical and wood working properties of selective bamboo species.

iv Techniques for natural dying of bamboo handicrafts, bamboo charcoal and shoot processing.

v A cottage industry for the production of bamboo furniture parts and handicrafts in Chiang Mai.

The project will organize and implement short training courses on production of bamboo furniture parts and handicrafts and bamboo charcoal. An additional output will be a feasibility study on the establishment of a bamboo shoot factory in Chiang Mai.
