Tropical forest tenure is one of the key issues to address in making the transition to sustainability. Local communities and indigenous people are more likely to manage forests sustainably if they have clear title to them. This report, jointly published by ITTO with partner Rights and Resources Initiative, is based on the background document for the jointly-organized Yaoundé Conference on Tropical Forest Tenure. It reviews recent trends in forest tenure in selected countries, positive developments, challenges remaining, and opportunities for expediting progress towards more equitable forest tenure (and thus SFM) in tropical countries.
