It is with profound sadness that the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) announces the passing of Mr James Singh, former Commissioner of Forests and one of the most distinguished and dedicated leaders in the forestry sector, both nationally and internationally. Mr Singh served as Commissioner from 1999 to 2020, making him one of the longest-serving heads of the GFC. His tenure was marked by visionary leadership, institutional strengthening, and a relentless pursuit of sustainable forest management and conservation.

During his time as Commissioner, Mr Singh represented the Cooperative Republic of Guyana at the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) with integrity and distinction. He was an active participant in the Council and its committees, making significant contributions to shaping policies and programmes in support of the sustainable trade and management of tropical timber. His insight, diplomacy, and commitment to producer country perspectives earned him a respected seat within the ITTO producer caucus, where he served as a key voice and negotiator for the interests of tropical forest nations.

Mr Singh was known not only for his deep technical knowledge but also for his warm personality, humility, and steadfast dedication to forestry. Many members of the ITTO community will fondly recall his presence at Council meetings as always being approachable, gracious, and wise, with a readiness to listen and contribute constructively. His presence uplifted the tone of negotiations and reminded all of the importance of shared stewardship of the world’s tropical forests.

Even after stepping down as Commissioner due to illness, Mr Singh continued to represent Guyana at ITTO meetings, accompanied by his devoted wife. His perseverance and quiet strength were a testament to his unwavering dedication to the forestry sector. He remained engaged in discussions, offered guidance, and exemplified the values of service and leadership until his final days.

Beyond his international role, Mr Singh played a foundational role in building and guiding generations of forestry professionals in Guyana. As a mentor, he inspired, instilled confidence and shaped the careers of countless individuals, many of whom now hold influential positions within the forestry and environmental sectors. His legacy is etched not only in policies and programmes but in the people and principles he nurtured.

Mr Singh’s passing is a tremendous loss to the global forestry community. His legacy of commitment, wisdom, and humanity will continue to inspire all who work for the sustainable management of the world’s forests.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the people of Guyana.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
