Summary
This pre-project proposes to study the possibility of promoting and developing among the native communities of the southeastern region of Peru the utilization of Guadua sarcocarpa - a bamboo that is the predominant species in that region. Currently this species is considered a hindrance by the local population and is burnt by them in their effort to establish new agricultural land. INRENA, however, considers that the "Paca", due to its similarity to bamboo, can be economically utilized for a variety of purposes just as bamboos have been used in Asia.

The main objective of the pre-project is to formulate a project proposal, jointly with experts from ITTO member countries where such bamboo-utilizing techniques have been developed, in order to promote the utilization of Guadua sarcocarpa in Peru. The final report of this pre-project (including a project proposal) was submitted to ITTO in 1997.
