Summary
Cote d’Ivoire is experiencing a severe forest degradation for several decades, and its consequences have become a permanent cause for concern among Cote d’Ivoire authorities. Faced with this situation, significant reforms undertaken by the national Government have resulted in the development of the 1988 Forest Master Plan (Plan Directeur Forestier, PDF) covering the years 1988-2015. Unfortunately, reforestation objectives set for a number of years in several national plans have not been attained for selected species (Obeche, African Mahogany and Tiokoue) due in part to the problem of both the quality and quantity of improved plant stock.

The project will contribute to the diversification of tree plantation species in Cote d’Ivoire through the establishment of a programme of cloning and seedling production technique improvement aimed at accelerating the development of Obeche, African Mahogany and Tiokoue industrial plantations. Specifically, it intends to develop strategies to ensure a regular supply of selected and improved plant stock of Obeche, African Mahogany and Tiokoue for reforestation programmes.

Expected outputs are:
- Clone breeding of Obeche initiated;
- Borer-resistant genotypes of African mahogany selected and cuttings produced; and
- Tiokoue propagation by cuttings is operational.
