Summary
This project will prepare and convene a sub-regional seminar, aiming at discussing and promoting appropriate policies and measures for the development of sustained forest industries in the Andean countries. The seminar will focus on the following topics: 1) policies and measures to encourage interaction and participation of the processing industries in the management and conservation of the resource; 2) policies, measures and mechanisms to discourage wasteful processing and to improve industrial efficiency and productivity; 3) case studies of sustainable, viable and profitable tropical forest industries; and 4) mechanisms and policies to promote the production of secondary processed goods and high value-added products. The proposal for this seminar follows up on a recommendation of the first seminar sponsored by ITTO for forestry development promotion in Latin America, held in Brazil in February 1988 [PD 21/87 (I)].
