This project consisted of a conference which was held in Manila, Philippines on 21-23 May 1996. The conference addressed the positive aspects, shortcomings, and limitations of community forestry as a tool to promote sustainable forest management. 130 participants from 40 countries, representing ITTO projects, government agencies, NGO's, and regional development organizations participated in the conference, and exchanged views and experiences with community forestry in their countries. They declared that community forestry was a fundamental requirement in forest management, that players should provide an enabling environment for it to operate, and requested ITTO and other international organizations to strengthen their support for community forestry.
