Summary
This 4-year project will carry out literature studies and research work on rattans to facilitate their import and use by consumers, particularly Chinese consumers. The project will prepare a research report, and establish a data bank with information on structure, physical, mechanical and chemical properties, industrial processing, and utilization of the various species of rattan imported from Southeast Asia. Project funds requested from ITTO will be mainly used to finance collection of rattan samples in Southeast Asia and laboratory research expenditures in China, as well as to allow study tours to overseas research institutes with recognized experience and knowledge on rattan and rattan research.
