Title PARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT, CONSERVATION AND REHABILITATION OF DEGRADED FOREST AREAS IN THE BAMBOUTOS MOUNTAIN CHAIN, WEST CAMEROON
Status COMPLETED
Budget
ITTO: $73.613,00
National Counterpart: $20.100,00
Project Total budget: $93.713,00
Summary
The degradation of the mountain ecosystem in the Bamboutos Range – the « water tower » of the West Cameroon region, an area with high cultural tourism potentials which acts as a climate-control system – has reached a critical threshold during past twenty years. The cause of this degradation process has been ascribed to a combination of three main factors, which are: climate variability, the fragility of this particular ecosystem and population pressure.
This pre-project proposal aims to provide the forests of this region with a strategic framework for sustainable management to be developed on the basis of a consensus that takes into account the interests of all stakeholders in generating an integrated management plan that includes a priority action plan; such action plan will contribute to improving the welfare of communities, mitigate the degradation of the ecosystem and implement the restoration process. The implementation of this pre- project will also remove the constraints that hinder the process of gazetting Integral Reserve currently under way in the region.
