Summary
The specific objectives of the pre-project are to review the current situation of furniture manufacturing in Myanmar and formulate a project proposal which would define an overall strategy and an action plan for improving productivity in furniture manufacturing in Myanmar.

Two international consultants were recruited to assist in the pre-project implementation. These consultants and their national counterparts reviewed the furniture industry situation in Myanmar, including the manufacturing, marketing and markets, and management aspects. The results of the review as well as recommendations to increase efficiency of furniture manufacturing in Myanmar are included in the final pre-project report, reproduced in document PPR 45/97 (I).

The study's main recommendations are: (i) Establishment of national furniture testing and training centers; (ii) Implementation of research and development activities to introduce lesser used species and reduce dependence on teak; (iii) Encouragement of private sector small and medium industries; (iv) Establishment of a national furniture board; (v) Increase cooperation with relevant organizations of neighboring countries; (vi) Explore joint venture and partnerships with foreign companies; and (vii) Promote furniture components and KD furniture as a first step in export market ventures.
