Summary |
The Pre-Project produced a comprehensive assessment of the forestry and wood industry situation in the Philippines. The study's primary concerns were the assessment of the demand for industrial tropical timber raw materials, review of logging and transport systems and wood processing technologies, silvicultural potential assessment of lesser used species, timber markets and trade, industrial plantation development and problems associated with industrial utilization of available raw materials, particularly in the remaining native forest, and forest conservation measures. The 530-page report of the study [PPR 18/91] contains important information and recommendations for the improvement of decisions in forest utilization and development in the Philippines in general, and in particular for the implementation of an ITTO approved project designed to carry out a research and development program to improve processing of logging residues and silvicultural thinnings and to promote their utilization as housing materials in the Philippines [PD 63/89 Rev.1].
