Summary |
Large areas of tropical forests, especially in the Asia Pacific region have been logged without adequate logging control or silvicultural management. Such logged-over forests may not be able to produce timber from the point of view of quantity and quality in the next cutting cycle and in many cases the continued productivity of such forests with regard to valuable species is doubtful. This is a growing problem faced in the tropical hardwood producing countries in the region; India, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This project therefor will try to:
More
1. investigate the past experience and research findings on silvicultural treatment of logged-over forests in the region; 2. to investigate the current situation and problems on silvicultural treatment of logged-over forests in the region; 3. to discuss with counterparts of the present research programme on natural regeneration and forest management system; and 4. to identify the problems on silvicultural treatment of logged-over forests and through analysis of feasibility study to formulate a full project. |
