In memory of Masao OTAKI

Mr Masao OTAKI, former Yokohama City Council member and a cherished friend and supporter of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), passed away on 7 March 2026 at the age of 80.

Mr Otaki believed strongly in ITTO’s mission and took genuine pleasure in learning about the Organization’s work and shared the importance of the ITTO with many audiences.

Seeking to see its impact firsthand, he traveled to the Amazon in 2005 with fellow Yokohama City Council members to observe ITTO’s activities in the field—an experience that further deepened his appreciation and commitment. His encouragement and support meant a great deal to ITTO and to many individuals who came to better appreciate its impact in the tropics through his efforts.

Mr Otaki’s friendship with ITTO will be greatly missed and he will be remembered with respect, gratitude, and affection. His legacy lives on in the understanding he fostered and in the many lives he touched through his steadfast support.
