[Pre-ITTC60 Session] Jazz-Bunraku: The Cat Who Went to Heaven
[Pre-ITTC60 Session] Jazz-Bunraku: The Cat Who Went to Heaven
Date & venue: 1 December 2024, Yokohama, Japan
Experience the magic of Jazz-Bunraku: The Cat Who Went to Heaven—an enchanting fusion of jazz music and traditional Japanese Bunraku puppetry, based on Nancy Harrow’s acclaimed musical. Directed by Off-Broadway's Will Pomerantz and first presented in Japan by Shimonakaza in 2022, this unique performance brings fresh life to Bunraku by replacing the traditional “shamisen” and “tayu” with jazz music, English songs, and narration.
The story follows a struggling artist whose life is transformed by the arrival of a cat named Good Fortune. Through their deepening bond, the artist embarks on a journey of compassion and sacrifice, making a decision that bridges love, art, and spirituality.
This free event offers an unforgettable cross-cultural experience, blending jazz and puppetry in a soulful retelling of a timeless tale. Reserve your seats now to witness this heartwarming and innovative performance!
This event is made possible by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the City of Yokohama, and the Sagami Puppet Theater Shimonakaza. The ITTO will hold its 60th Council session from 2nd to 6th of December this year. As a celebration of this milestone, the Jazz-Bunraku is an offering of ITTO and its member countries as a gratitude to the generosity, support, and hospitality of Japan and its people.
