Resumen
The Atlantic Rain Forest is one of six biomes that exist in Brazil. Due to its exceptional biological diversity, it is among the five top priority conservation areas in the world. This biome hosts 80% of the Brazilian GNP and is home to more than 110 million people (or 60% of the Brazilian population), who depend on key environmental services produced by forests, such as fresh water, clean air, and climate stability.

As a result of several deforestation activities over the years, only 7% of the Atlantic Forest original vegetation is left. Therefore, in order to be further protected and recovered, additional incentives and financial resources - such as sales from carbon credits - must be identified and channelled to landowners and local communities.

REDD+ is a promising mechanism that might be able to assist the conservation of recovery of forests. However, the steps needed to actually develop a project on the ground are still very technical and complex. This proposal aims to identify the potential to use REDD+ to help restore and preserve the Atlantic Forest.
