New Fellowships awarded at the 2023 autumn cycle

Sixteen fellowships were awarded by the International Tropical Organization at the 59th Session of International Tropical Timber Council. The newest group of fellows represents 9 different producer member countries and includes 5 female fellows.  The total amount of the fellowships was US$ 107,023.69.

ITTO offers fellowships through the Freezailah Fellowship Fund to promote human resource development and to strengthen professional expertise in member countries in tropical forestry and related disciplines. The goal is to promote the sustainable management of tropical forests, the efficient use and processing of tropical timber, and better economic information about the international trade in tropical timber.

2023 Cycle Fellowship awardees:

Mr. Makoumambe BAYADEA (Togo)--Preparation/Publication/Dissemination of a dissertation entitled "Diachronic studies and contributions to the sustainable management of the Kara classified forest in the commune of Kozah2 in the North Togo”.

Mr. M Murughan Manikam (Malaysia)-- Participating in the XXVI IUFRO World Congress 2024 in Stockholm, Sweden in June 2024; presenting an oral presentation entitled “Forest Certification and Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG)”; and participating in the IFSA-IUFRO Mentorship Programme.

Mr. Suraj Goswami (India)-- PhD in Forestry/Forest Management, Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal, India

Mr. Kodjovi Mawuégnigan Léonard AGBODAN (Togo)-- Post-Doctoral Study in Life Sciences in the Laboratory of Botany and Plant Ecology (LBEV), University of Lomé (UL), Lomé, Togo

Mr. Komi AKAKPO (Togo)--Post-Graduate Study (Thesis entitled:“Development of estimation models and valuation into granules of dead leaves and products from the first thinning of plantations teak in Togo”) in Forestry Research Laboratory of the University of Lomé, Togo

Mr. YE LWIN AUNG (Myanmar)-- Developing an Identification guide to orchid biodiversity in Myanmar: Implication for Biodiversity Conservation

Ms. Ambika Budakoti (India)-- Study tour to the Applied Mycology Lab, Department of Wood Science and Engineering, College of Forestry, Oregon State University, USA, to study and get trained in Wood Spalting using forest fungi.

Mr. Victor Alexis Peña Lara (Mexico)-- Mapping of the taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity of tropical forests of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Mr. Haryanto Yatap (Indonesia)-- Doctoral Degree in Forest Management Science, IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia under Research (DBR), an innovative program developed by National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN)

Mr. Albert Piñon (The Philippines) -- PhD Study in Forestry, majoring in Silviculture and Forest Influences, University of the Philippines for the School Year (2024-2025). (PhD dissertation is entitled: Advancing the Science of Urban Forestry in the Municipalities of Los Baños and Bay, Philippineser, Apayao, Philippines.)

Ms. May Zun Phyo (Myanmar)-- Master’s Degree Research on "Assessing Challenges and Weaknesses in the Forest Certification Sector of Myanmar: Drawing Insights from China's Forest Certification", School of Ecology and Nature Conservation, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing, China

Mr. Mohammad Yunus (Indonesia)-- Preparation/Publication/Dissemination of Master’s Degree Research Thesis: Economic Value of Peatland Ecosystem Services in Riau Province, Sumatra
