Summary
The objective of the project is to organize an international Conference with the view to assessing the current state of research and development, innovation and other technological developments in the global forest and wood product industries, and determine policies and strategies to further increase innovation and its uptake to continually improve the sustainability and competitiveness of the forest and wood products industries. The Conference will also provide opportunity for building on existing collaborative and strategic alliances as well as developing new ones to assist the transfer of technology, skill and knowledge. The Conference will include a special Session on tropical timbers. Two major outputs are expected from the project:
· The Conference proceedings describing the current state of innovation in the global industry, as well as new developments in knowledge, products and processes;
· The development of new alliances/partnerships, which could assist on-going innovation, its adoption and transfer among the global industry.

Summary
The objective of this pre-project is to increase recognition of the economic worth of environmental goods and services, particularly those derived from natural and planted forests. This involves: the identification of forest services in Guatemala; the development of basic guidelines for the promotion and regulation of such services; the formulation of a proposal for the definition of the most suitable compensation mechanisms; and the strengthening of the Department of Forest Externalities (Departamento de Externalidades Forestales – DEXFO) of INAB to help create national technical capacity.

Summary
There has been strong interest in afforestation and reforestation (AR) projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol since this treaty took effect on 16 February 2005. This project will promote AR-CDM project activities through public-private partnerships, linking host developing countries with industrialised investor countries.

Summary
This project will propose an optimal marketing model for environmental services of tropical and other forests in China and start the marketing process of China's forest environmental services. Specifically it will produce: 1) a background report on the marketing of environmental tropical forest services in China; 2) a website presenting up-to-date information on the project and relevant topics; 3) the first (experimental) agency of market trading of forest environmental services in China; and 4) two real examples of environmental services' trade.

Summary
This project will promote African participation in the CDM by convening an international workshop designed to improve the understanding of CDM mechanisms and identify opportunities, constraints and challenges for African timber-producing countries. The workshop will particularly involve key stakeholders in the CDM, international institutions involved in forestry activities in Africa, energy companies, the private sector, government policymakers and NGOs, and scientific institutions in Ghana.

Summary
The Chiquiaca and Orozas communities in Bolivia's Department of Tarija have developed community-based forest management plans. This three-year project is providing technical and financial support to the communities for the legal implementation of their plans, starting with activities in one of each community's micro-watershed areas.
