Non-wood forest products (NWFPs), which can be defined as 'all forest products except timber and wood, including products from trees, plants and animals, produced in a forest area', can help communities living in or near forests to meet their subsistence needs and provide them with supplemental income. Like any natural, potentially renewable resource, NWFPs must be managed carefully if they are to be sustainable. Under the Yokohama Action Plan, ITTO is committed to promoting their development because of their potential to improve the economic viability of sustainable forest management.
